Lingerie Football League

Tampa was referred to as The Champion city having won the Super Bowl by the Tampa Bay Bucanneers and the following year after that The Stanley Cup by the Tampa Bay Lightning. And we should not forget winning the Arena Football League Championship by the Tampa Bay Storm.

Since the next Super Bowl will be here in Tampa once again next year, we may add another Tampa team with a potential shot of taking the championship.

Per Tampa Tribune, The Lingerie Football League started as a pay-per-view game between models that aired during halftime of the 2004 Super Bowl. The following year, the league announced that it had formed four teams. In subsequent years, just a couple of games were played, but the championship was always scheduled during Super Bowl halftimes, targeting football-loving men who could care less about the musical halftime events.

Christopher Martin, business affairs director of the California-based lingerie league, said that the Tampa team will form in May when the players will attend class to learn gridiron terms and the nuances of the game. In November, they begin practice.

This year, four of the 10 teams will be a part of Super Bowl weekend in Tampa. The Tampa Bay Breeze will play the Miami Caliente the night before the Super Bowl and the Los Angeles Temptation will play the Phoenix Scorch. The games will be in Tampa, he said. The winners will play the championship during the halftime show of the Super Bowl, which also is in Tampa this year.

Beginning next year, the lingerie-clad teams will begin playing a 10-game regular season on Friday nights, he said.

Tampa got a team because of several reasons, he said. Having the Super Bowl here this year didn’t hurt.

“You have local market NFL team with the Bucs and you have strong sports-minded community,” Martin said. “It’s a market we can make a pretty big splash in.” Also, he said, “You have a great crop of women that have athletic backgrounds and are beautiful.”
